JOB PURPOSE:

The purpose of this position is to provide economic research and analytical support to the Risk Management Group. The economist will be responsible for a variety of tasks requiring a high degree of training in and knowledge of economics and statistical methods, including monitoring economic trends, building up and managing economic data bases, conducting econometric analyses, providing analytical inputs into portfolio and risk management and presenting economic overviews and analysis to internal client groups. The individual is expected to collaborate closely with senior managers across the Group, and to be able to transform theoretical insights into practical applications.


PRINCIPAL JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Economic Analysis:

• Undertake research and analysis of global Africa and country economic and financial market trends and developments under the direction of the Group Head, Risk Management

• Keeps abreast of current economic and financial developments-internationally, nationally, and regionally. Uses a high degree of competence in economic analysis to assess the implications of these developments.

• Establish forecast for economic growth, inflation and policy rates for countries under coverage and identify gaps with consensus

• Perform special research projects into areas of particular market relevance


Data Bases and Data Writing:

• Develop economic dada bases, analytical tools and models for capturing, analyzing and displaying important global economic and financial market trends

• Analyzes economic data releases and policy announcements with the objective of assessing how forecast are tracking and, importantly, identifying turning points in key economic trends.

• Develop and maintain economic models and indicators and gather data, for forecasting and data watching on African economies.


Inputs into Risk Management Process:
• Prepare written report for publication on global economic issues and trends. Prepare, maintain and update power-point and other presentations for internal and external use, including helping to prepare inputs to the Board Risk Management Committee and the Portfolio Analytics Team.

• Participate in on-site risk management reviews and examination related to banks’ use of quantitative techniques in such activities such as credit risk, operational risk and capital allocation.

• Frequent communication and presentation of forecast, data watching analysis, special projects results and general macroeconomic views to risk management and finance teams, and occasionally to broader internal and external forums.


Staff Development:

• Uses a high level of professional competence in economic analysis by participating in the development and teaching of seminars or courses for Risk Managers. Assist Senior Department and Bank Management on the formulation of Risk Management Policy

• Keep informed of academic, central bank and think-tank economic research and thinking.


JOB CONTEXT:

The Senior Economist will serve as a recognized authority and leader in advanced economic analysis, providing expert commentary at all levels and on all aspects of business, including macroeconomic, sectoral and macroeconomic issues. The individual will enhance the rigor of specific technical areas such as analysis of portfolio constraints, macroeconomic briefing materials; and advocate their incorporation into portfolio and business strategy management.


JOB DIMENSION:

• Interact with ETI Functional Heads / Business Executives

• Interface with other risk functions as ETI (Market/Credit/Portfolio/Risk Analytics) and contributes to the overall GRM objectives. 

Qualifications:
EXPERIENCE: • Minimum of 10 years of experience in global and regional macroeconomic analysis within the financial services industry • High degree of familiarity with the functioning of financial markets a strong plus. • Strong quantitative background in statistical and econometric techniques • Strong verbal and written communication skills and entrepreneurial orientation are required • High level of creativity in structuring research assignments and deliverables is required • Excellent proficiency with both written and spoken English and working knowledge of French will be an added advantage.
