Welthungerhilfe has been implementing an integrated food security project in Htan Tabin Township since 2007 covering 10 village tracts; and addresses the issues of poverty and food security through an integrated approach that includes technical and material support for agriculture, non-agricultural income generating activities, nutrition education and rehabilitation of village schools and access infrastructure. The project follows a communitybased, participatory approach, which fosters the active participation of the beneficiaries in the development process and builds community based structures to provide for local ownership. Specifically, the objective of the project is 'Through increased income opportunities, improved social infrastructure and strengthened self-help capacity of the local communities, the project contributes to poverty reduction, food security and sustainable development of vulnerable rural populations living on the outskirts of Yangon'.
Overall Objectives of the Assignment
The overall objective of the short term assignment is to assess the current status of vegetable production in the target area, provide both technical advice to rural farmers in the project area as well as to link rural small scale commercial vegetable producers/producer groups to local markets
Specific Objectives of the Assignment
  • Perform an assessment of current vegetable cropping practices, potential crops according to the market and the environment, potential opportunities for producer groups and potential linkages to markets in Yangon.
  • Design and implement a season long intensive training to small scale commercial vegetable growers in the project area (5 village tracts) and provide individual field level technical follow-up to individual producers or producer groups trained.
  • Assist rural small scale vegetable producers in connecting to new markets and potential sources of extension/agriculture technology
Time Frame & Location
  • Time frame: 6 months (180 working days) from the starting date specified in the contract
  • Locations: Welthungerhilfe Htain Tabin Project Area
Requirements
  • University degree in Agriculture or Horticulture
  • Minimum of 10 years professional experience working with vegetable growers
  • Experience in working with commercial vegetable growers and advantage
  • Proficient in spoken and written English
  • Very good communication skills, ability to coordinate with community leaders and to organize community groups
  • Show initiative and actively assume responsibilities, independent work planning and organization/ participation in a multi-disciplinary team
