ANNOUNCEMENT: DIRECTOR OF INSTITUTE
The Pan African University (PAU) is a continental academic and research institution created by the African Union, that is based on the following guiding principles: academic freedom, autonomy, accountability, quality assurance, strengthening existing African institutions at the graduate and post-graduate levels to enable them to serve the whole continent, excellence and international partnerships in academic and research activities, gender parity and equality at all levels and in all university functions. The PAU also aims at the promotion of African integration through the mobility of students, academic and administrative staff, collaborative research linked to the challenges faced by African countries, the institution of an appropriate framework to enable the African Diaspora to contribute towards the development of higher education and research in Africa, promotion of inter-disciplinary and multidisciplinary research programmes linked to policy making processes, promotion of productive linkages with the industrial sector for innovation and dissemination of new knowledge, full use of Information and Communication Technologies for pedagogy, research and management. The PAU takes into account the basic principles of the United Nations Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

  2. Pan African University Institute of Basic Sciences, Technology and Innovation (PAUSTI) located at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) in Kenya for Eastern Africa
  3. Pan African University Institute of Governance, Humanities and Social Sciences (PAUGHSS) located at University of Yaoundé II in Cameroon for Central Africa
  4. Pan African University Institute of Water and Energy Sciences (including climate change) (PAUWES) located at University of Tlemcen in Algeria for North Africa.
2. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Job Objectives
This is a senior position within the Pan African University's Management structure. Reporting to the Rector, the holder of this position will serve as the Principal Academic Officer with responsibility for oversight of all academic programs at the PAU Institutes 1
She/he shall specifically be in charge of the following:
  1. Supervise the planning and procedures and guidelines development of academic programs, policies,
  2. Plan the evaluation and review of academic programs and curriculum development
  3. Liaise with national, regional, continental and international accreditation and quality assurance agencies
  4. Coordinate the evaluation processes for faculty hiring, promotion, and tenure, and make recommendations
  5. Participate in budget preparation for academic and academic-related programs. Participate as member of PAU council and senate
  6. Liase with host university and host country senior officials on matters relating to the institute
  7. Perform other related tasks and related responsibilities as assigned by the Vice Rector
EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
  • Be a professor or Associate Professor of a recognized University with an earned Ph.D. in one of the thematic fields of the PAU
4. WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT
  • Candidates must have at least 8 years progressive experience in senior academic and management positions at a modern university environment.
  • Five (5) years of appropriate experience at a Senior lecturer level and above and another 5 years' experience at senior management position such as Chair of department, Dean of faculty, or Director of academic programs or their equivalent.
5. OTHER RELEVANT SKILLS
  1. Experience in areas of teaching and learning, innovative programme design, academic development and support, and digital scholarly resources
  2. Knowledge of national, regional and international accreditation and quality assurance standards and processes
  3. Experience of the higher education environment in Africa.
  4. Demonstrated team leadership skills in change and transition management;
  5. Management experience, excellent interpersonal skills and ability to organize and motivate others and to work in a multi-cultural environment from diverse constituencies;
  6. Excellent report writing and presentation skills;
  7. Demonstrated ability to communicate and negotiate effectively and build collaborative relationships;
  8. Excellent analytical and problem solving skills
  9. Good planning and organizational skills;
  10. Commitment to personal performance and self-development;
  11. Evidence of ethical, professionalism; transparent, fair, dependable leadership style and
  12. Demonstrated ability to be innovative, resourceful, and action-oriented; Computer literacy and competency in MS Office Applications
6. Language Requirement:
Proficiency in one of the African Union working languages. Knowledge of one or several other working languages would be an added advantage.
7. Age Requirement:
Candidates must preferably be between 30 and 50 years old.
8. Tenure of Appointment:
The appointment will be made on a fixed term contract for a period of three (3) years, of with the first twelve months will be considered as a probationary period. Thereafter, the contract will be for a period of two years renewable, subject to satisfactory performance and deliverables.

11. Remuneration:
Indicative basic salary of US$ 73,646.00 per annum plus other related entitlements e.g. Post adjustment (46% of basic salary), Housing allowance 16,819.20 perineum), education allowance (75% of tuition and other education related expenses for every eligible dependent up to a maximum of US$7,800.00 per child per annum), etc for internationally recruited staff of the Commission.
