IITA and SNV seek a highly motivated individual with several years of experience in research and extension in sustainable cocoa production and in REDD+ matters. The candidate will join the team of the the Cameroon Cocoa-Eco Project, a project that intends to enhance local capacity in sustainable cocoa farming through the introduction of innovations with emphasis on cocoa sustainability through intensification and diversification. The project will concurrently contribute to efforts in mitigating climate change threats to cocoa production, enhancing carbon sequestration and linking cocoa farming to the REDD+ mechanism.
Position/Responsibilities
The Cocoa Production and REDD+ Advisor will be supervised by IITA-Cameroon Country Representative and SNV Cameroon Cocoa-Eco Project Manager. This is an appointment with IITA but time is split at 60% with IITA and 40% with SNV. The successful candidate will undertake the following tasks:
  • Assist IITA Country Representative and SNV Cocoa-Eco Project Manager in project management and execution.
  • Advise and enhance the capacity of SNV staff in sustainable cocoa production and in REDD+ matters.
  • Liaise with IITA REDD+ focal scientist based in Kinshasa, DR Congo and SNV REDD+ team in Cameroon.
  • Liaise with IITA and SNV staff in the execution of activities as in the project logical framework.
  • Prepare and submit timely semi-annual reports.
  • Lead and contribute where needed to project publications.
  • Participate actively in resource mobilization for other projects/activities.
  • Undertake any other duty as requested by the supervisors.
Educational Qualifications:
MSc or PhD in natural resources management, agronomy or related disciplines.
Core Competencies:
  • Excellent knowledge and skills in sustainable cocoa production, including integrated crop production and management, cocoa intensification and diversification, and occupational health and safety.
  • Established connections with cocoa stakeholders in Cameroon.
  • Good knowledge and experience in climate change mitigation and adaptation, including REDD+.
  • Excellent organizational and networking skills.
  • Excellent project management and report writing skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a multidisciplinary and multi-cultural environment.

Background
The project that is assigned to the national UNV is the "Project of protection and assistance to refugees and urban asylum-seekers." This project aims to provide refugees and asylum seekers various forms of assistance in the areas of protection (registration, documentation, promotion and defense of the rights of refugees), the security of persons and property (fight against violence, exploitation, abuse and discrimination), access to basic services and the provision of basic needs (access to health services, education, employment and income-generating activities), promoting refugee participation in finding solutions to their problems and self-management.
The Office of the United Nations for Refugees (UNHCR) is present in Cameroon through the Representation based in Yaoundé (Central Region), field offices located Bertoua (Eastern Region); Meiganga (region of Adamawa), Douala (Littoral Region) populations within the mandate of the UNHCR in urban areas are of different nationalities and different profils.Au June 2013, the number of urban refugees stood at 8,025. Many of them have fled their country to escape insecurity due to armed conflict. These refugees come mainly from RCA, CHD, RWA, DRC, ICO and live mainly in Yaoundé and Douala. Refugee groups are mostly men of different profiles (farmers, merchants, students, ex-combatants, teachers and nurses ...) recognized by the 1951 Convention and UNHCR's mandate.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Protection Officer, in the recording unit and documentation, UNV main tasks will be to:
  • Receive, collect and classify orderly refugee cases (active and closed)
  • Ensure optimal management of physical assets records
  • Handle different requests for files requested by colleagues
  • Systematically use the FTS software to manage all the inputs and outputs of CI records
  • Edit / classify all correspondence referred to the archives
  • Print and affix barcodes on all folders asylum
  • Print and staple the pages based on the records of all CI.
  • Perform part of the update events of protection proGres
  • Make the information in proGres research.
  • All other tasks at the request of the Protection Division
In addition to the foregoing, the UN Volunteers are encouraged to:
  • Enhance their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading the documentation provided by UNV, external publications and take active part in UNV activities, for example, involved in the commemorative activities of the International Volunteer Day ( IVD) on 5 December.
  • Familiarize and develop all forms of traditional volunteering and / or local level of the host country.
  • Reflect the type and nature of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in substantial reflections.
  • Contribute to the drafting of articles on field experiences to be submitted for publication / UNV website, newsletter and press releases program, etc..
  • Contribute Program host of United Nations Volunteers newly arrived in the country of assignment;
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteers or encourage individuals and organizations to use the services of online volunteers whenever technically possible.

Functional Responsibilities
